“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, + all your mind.’ This is the FIRST commandment. A SECOND is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself'." –Matthew 22:37-39

Word of the Week: Esteem

On May 31, 2016 By mbethanyIn In ___ We Trust {Series}, The Word Works Series7 Comments

“Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem?”

Isaiah 2:22

The main idea: to hold someone in esteem is to hold them over you.

Rephrased: using someone as a “maker” in your life.

How? By allowing man to:

  1. Plan for you

Not only do we plot our own steps faultily, but we’re also glad to plan out other’s courses (and have ours mapped for us by people we admire!)

  1. Devise for you

Speaking of plotting. The schemes of man look especially good when a leader or public figure touts them, don’t they?

  1. Invent for you

When we don’t see a way, we’re so relieved to find that someone else has created one. That’s way easier than accepted “no entrance here” from the Lord.

  1. Design for you

One of the things about making something is having intentions for it. It’s so tempting to allow others to shape our motivations and methods after their intentions. That’s typically a golden ticket to acceptance, after all.

  1. Calculate for you

Calculating our worth based off of the values others have or the values we have in regard to those we look up to? Pretty sure that’s a thing. (Still looking forward to reading Kristine’s book on this, Over It!)

My practical example of this:

We would love nothing more than for a person we respect to tell us they want to use us and have plans for how. If they would also devise the method and guarantee that they would make a way no matter what, we’d be floored.

Add in specifically showing us how meaningful their design for us is. And then…to calculate it all. This is what I value, they would say, and then we would strive for that. Knowing they appreciate us…

We seek that. We ask questions of people we respect or see as authority figures because we’d like for those we hold in esteem to value, use, teach, lead, and accept us.

What’s so silly, though, is that we seek this from man. Mere man, who is as fleeting as we are, when we have this from God.

And the truth is: God offers all of this. The one we ought to hold in esteem, who is everlasting and perfect, is worthy of the esteem. He’s our true maker, and oh, does He live up to every bit of this that we seek.
